Magic is all but extinct. When the last ailing wizard casts a final desperate spell to summon the descendants of ancient bloodlines to a school for magic now in disrepair…those chosen ones find a horror of the likes they’ve never experienced. They will have to confront the deepest parts of themselves, their tragic pasts and defeat each other in order to survive the ordeal.
Thoughts…
This one was just a random pick from the pile, imagine a not so refined Die meets a modern version of the Dungeons and Dragons Saturday morning cartoon. From this first issue the setting is clearly defined but there is still plenty left to explore to keep you wanting to read on. There are ongoing story threads set up as the issue goes on, especially in regards to how the characters are linked, which I am sure is going to be part of the focus on the series as a whole, other than the magic that is.
I enjoyed the writing style and thought the pacing was good throughout. I liked the concept and what is being set up as the issue continues.
I really liked the art style here, definitely paired with the story and setting well. I liked how dark yet vibrant the colours were in the older magical world and how they contrasted with the more muted colours of the current day. I liked the layout the letter used for sounds that were not speech, the atmospheric sounds like breathing or the slamming of doors, all these little things add depth to it overall.
The 5th issue of this series has just come out recently with the 6th and final issue released 25th October. I was tempted to read on but held off for now so that I could read all the issues at once. Good story and concept and great art styling, interesting first issue. I would give this 7 out of 10 and will definitely read the complete series as soon as I can.
