Thoughts…
I am really getting further and further into the more indie publishers and their take on horror comics. So when I was asked to take a look at this aptly named horror comic I jumped at the chance. There are actually two stories in this issue both occupying the same universes but have very different tones and styles.
The main story is a full on mad scientist working for a cabal of other mad scientists called the Science Underground. They facilitate the continuation of experiments deemed too dangerous or too unethical for mainstream science. This issue is all about the set up of the concept and the creation of the main characters in the story. All the groundwork is laid out nicely and we get a good deal of information about what is going on, and then it all really kicks off. With the secret labs seemingly being raided by an unknown strike team the scientists are ready to scatter but before they get a chance to run they are confronted by a mysterious man. At the same time a feral creature seems to be on a rampage through the corridors of the lab, how are all these things connected, we find out a little more before the issue ends, as we get the “Origin Point” for the answers to these questions.
The second story is more light in its tone but still within the set amongst the same group of mad scientists. We get the story of Dr Loaiza and his mouse Nibbles, together they are unlocking the mysteries of telekinetic powers. It is loosely linked to the main story as the Dr is mentioned in that story feels a bit more tongue in cheek and fills out the world a bit more between issues of the main event. It made me think more of the pulp horror comics of early times as I was reading it.
Both stories were a fun read, the main story feeling dark and brood, giving me 90s comics vibes in its style and approach. This feels like a great action horror story in the making and has a lot of potential. The backup story added a little extra to the world and gave us context to something that was mentioned in the main. I want to read on and find out where this story is going and looking online it appears that the 4th part has just come out in store so it sounds like a perfect time to jump in. I would give this 7 out of 10 and I am hooked to read more..
