Thoughts…
A manga-influenced teen adventure set in the strange post-apocalyptic America… of 1955.
The above is the solicitation for this comic, doesn’t really give much away at all but it's Scott Snyder. I have never read Manga so I am not sure how influenced this is but I do enjoy post-apocalyptic stories.
This issue is mainly set up for the series, giving us the backstory of all our main characters and how they are all linked together in the small town of our setting. We are shown moments of the lives of the cast that all lead up to the moment that everything goes sideways in a major way. The writing is done really well as you would expect from Snyder, and it doesn’t take long for you to be drawn into the tale he is weaveing. There are more than a few moments that will elicit an emotional response from the reader and it is then that you will know you are hooked. As the issue continues, it sets the scene and gets us ready for what is about to happen but trust me you will not be ready for where this book goes. When the post apocalyptic part kicks in all bets are off, the last few pages of the book are crazy, so much happens as the issue comes to a close that your head will be spinning. That being said I would have happily continued to read this series if it was going to continue telling the story of the kids in the small town in a normal slice of life style run.
The art is great, it's hard to make every day life seem interesting but everything is so well presented throughout it never seems mundane, and the colours really set everything off. But then everything changes and that's where everything is heightened, there are some really cool images in the panels in the second part of the book, and as we get to the last few panels things take a terrifying turn, and that last panel…..
This book was a surprise find and one that I am really glad I stumbled upon . The whole pivot to the post-apocalyptic part is done really well and all the lead up to it gives you a reason to be invested in the characters. I feel like this series will have us guessing right up to the final issue as there is definitely something more going on than meets the eye for sure. I'm going to give it a 9 out of 10, a perfect first issue really and like it said I would have read about the lives of the characters even if it didn’t all go to hell. What's more you can read it for free through Amazon at the moment and issue 2 is there as well….
